T-pattern analysis for the study of temporal structure of animal and human behavior : a comprehensive review
2014
A basic tenet in the realm of modern behavioral sciences is that behavior consists of patterns in time. For this reason, investigations of behavior deal with sequences that are not easily perceivable by the unaided observer. This problem calls for improved means of detection, data handling and analysis. This review focuses on the analysis of the temporal structure of behavior carried out by means of a multivariate approach known as T-pattern analysis. Using this technique, recurring sequences of behavioral events, usually hard to detect, can be unveiled and carefully described. T-pattern analysis has been successfully applied in the study of various aspects of human or animal behavior such …
Performance of the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC
2014
ALICE is the heavy-ion experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The experiment continuously took data during the first physics campaign of the machine from fall 2009 until early 2013, using proton and lead-ion beams. In this paper we describe the running environment and the data handling procedures, and discuss the performance of the ALICE detectors and analysis methods for various physics observables.
T-pattern detection and analysis for the discovery of hidden features of behaviour
2018
Abstract Background The behaviour of all living beings consists of hidden patterns in time; consequently, its nature and its underlying dynamics are intrinsically difficult to be perceived and detected by the unaided observer. Method Such a scientific challenge calls for improved means of detection, data handling and analysis. By using a powerful and versatile technique known as T-pattern detection and analysis (TPA) it is possible to unveil hidden relationships among the behavioural events in time. Results TPA is demonstrated to be a solid and versatile tool to study the deep structure of behaviour in different experimental contexts, both in human and non human subjects. Conclusion This re…
Automated single ring infiltrometer with a low-cost microcontroller circuit
2015
Automation of a new single ring infiltrometer.Data acquisition system based on the open source microcontroller platform Arduino.New method to minimize the disturbance of the soil surface.New approach to process transducer output. A method to automate data collection with a compact infiltrometer under constant head conditions was developed. The infiltrometer consists of a containment ring with a small quasi-constant head of water (i.e., 2-3mm) that is controlled by a Mariotte reservoir and a data acquisition system based on the open source microcontroller platform Arduino and a differential pressure transducer. The presented design can be easily reproduced and operated. The infiltrometer was …
Proposal of geographic information systems methodology for quality control procedures of data obtained in naturalistic driving studies
2015
The primary goal of naturalistic driving studies is to provide a comprehensive observation of the driver's behaviour under real-life conditions by measureing a great number of parameters at high temporal frequencies. Achieving this goal, however, is a complex endeavor that faces many challenges such as the complexity of the vehicle instrumentation during the phase of data collection, and the difficult handling of large data volumes during the phase of data analysis. These drawbacks often cause episodes of data losses. Improving the technical aspects of the collection of naturalistic data is of paramount importance to increase the return of the investment made in it. An aspect to consider is…
Geo‐referencing naturalistic driving data using a novel method based on vehicle speed
2013
Naturalistic driving is an experimentation model that allows us to recognise the driving modes observing the driver's behaviour at the wheel of a set of people in natural conditions during long periods of observation. This research methodology aims at increasing the representativeness of the data collected in opposition to data stemming from highly controlled laboratory experiments. However, naturalistic driving research designs produce large volumes of data that are difficult to handle. Thus, it is very important to work with suitable methods for representing and interpreting data, allowing us to observe the variability of the results. The aim of this study is to implement a new methodolog…
Analysis of the ATLAS Rome Production Experience on the LHC Computing Grid
2006
The Large Hadron Collider at CERN will start data acquisition in 2007. The ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) experiment is preparing for the data handling and analysis via a series of Data Challenges and production exercises to validate its computing model and to provide useful samples of data for detector and physics studies. The last Data Challenge, begun in June 2004 and ended in early 2005, was the first performed completely in a Grid environment. Immediately afterwards, a new production activity was necessary in order to provide the event samples for the ATLAS physics workshop, taking place in June 2005 in Rome. This exercise offered a unique opportunity to estimate the reached improvem…
New Areas of Application of Comparable Corpora
2019
This chapter describes several approaches of using comparable corpora beyond the area of MT for under-resourced languages, which is the primary focus of the ACCURAT project. Section 7.1, which is based on Rapp and Zock (Automatic dictionary expansion using non-parallel corpora. In: A. Fink, B. Lausen, W. Seidel, & A. Ultsch (Eds.) Advances in Data Analysis, Data Handling and Business Intelligence. Proceedings of the 32nd Annual Meeting of the GfKl, 2008. Springer, Heidelberg, 2010), addresses the task of creating resources for bilingual dictionaries using a seed lexicon; Sect. 7.2 (based on Rapp et al., Identifying word translations from comparable documents without a seed lexicon. A framework for data quality handling in enterprise service bus
2013
Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is proposed to address the application integration problem by facilitating communication among different systems in a loosely coupled, standard-based, and protocol independent manner. Data sources are maintained out of the ESB's control and there should be a mechanism to select the most suitable data source among all available data sources. Especially, when two or more data sources are about the same object. For instance, it is normal to use more than one sensor to measure pressure or temperature at a particular point. Data quality can play an important role in selecting data sources in ESB since quality of data is an essential factor in the success of organizat…
